About Us
We are pleased to present our 2017 Annual Water Quality Report. This document outlines the quality water and services we provide daily to Laurens residents. Our primary goal is to deliver safe, reliable water to your home.
Our water comes from Lake Rabon, located approximately 8 miles west of our Water Treatment Facility on SC Hwy 252. The Laurens County Water and Sewer Commission owns and manages Lake Rabon, which was completed in 1987 under the Federal Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act. This multipurpose reservoir serves flood control, water supply, and recreational needs, with 2,426 acre-feet specifically reserved for municipal and commercial water requirements.
For questions about this report or our water services, please contact us at (864) 681-4300 or email feedback@lcpw.com. We encourage our valued customers to stay informed about their water utility operations. Our monthly meetings are open to the public and held on the second Monday at 5:30pm at 214 Church Street, Laurens.
Our Source Water Assessment Plan is available for review at www.scdhec.gov/water/html/srcewtr.html. If you don't have internet access, please contact our office to arrange document review.
LCPW regularly monitors your water according to Federal and State regulations. Our testing from January 1st to December 31st, 2017 shows that as water moves over land or underground, it can collect various substances including microbes, inorganic and organic chemicals, and radioactive materials. While all drinking water (including bottled water) may reasonably contain small amounts of some substances, this doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

In the 1920s, Laurens residents recognized the need to upgrade their utility infrastructure. Their most urgent priority was a water treatment plant, as water was then sourced from wells with minimal chemical treatment and distributed through mains using diesel-powered pumps.
To finance these improvements, residents separated the utility system from the general city government, creating a Commission of Public Works. This established a dedicated revenue stream, independent from property taxes, for operating, maintaining, and developing the utility system.
In February 1922, the South Carolina General Assembly enacted legislation forming the Laurens Board of Commissioners of Public Works, initiating the development of the utility system. Construction of the water treatment plant began later that year.
During the 1950s, Laurens established a municipally-owned natural gas system, adding a fourth utility to their consolidated network. All utility customers have access to and influence over the local utility boards and city councils that govern utility policies.
Laurens CPW is one of approximately 30 CPWs across South Carolina. Like all other CPWs, from small communities like McCormick and Westminster to larger cities like Greenville and Charleston, Laurens CPW is a citizen-created, not-for-profit, locally owned utility. This local governance structure is significantly different from private utilities.
For nearly a century, we've taken pride in the fact that Laurens County utilities are provided by members of our own community who live and work here.
