Lovington Municipal Water Supply

Lovington was founded at the beginning of the 20th century. The community's first retail establishment, "Jim M. Love Grocery Store," opened in 1908. The store also housed the town's first mailbox, with John Love appointed as postmaster. Lea County formed in 1917 from portions of Chaves and Eddy Counties, with Lovington designated as the county seat.

Throughout its early history, Lovington primarily served as an agricultural and ranching hub. While oil was discovered in 1928, it didn't significantly impact the local economy until 1950 when the Denton pool was found nine miles northeast of town. The Denton field quickly developed 92 producing wells, and subsequent oil exploration shaped Lovington's economy, workforce, and community character.

Population growth in Lovington during the first half of the century reflected steady agricultural expansion, while post-1950 changes directly correlated with oil and gas industry development. Only recently has the dairy industry begun contributing to local growth. The 1920 Census recorded 411 residents, growing to 1,916 by 1940. Between 1940 and 1960, Lovington experienced 500% population growth, later stabilizing to today's approximately 9,600 residents.

Lovington enjoys a climate typical of eastern New Mexico and western Texas, featuring warm summer days, cool nights, and mild sunny winters. Summer temperatures typically reach the 90s during day and cool to the 60s at night, while winter daytime highs range from the 50s to 60s. Community spirit has remained a defining characteristic of Lovington from its earliest days through the present.
