What happens when you're summoned to traffic court?

Below are some commonly asked questions. (Note: This information is not a substitute for legal advice.)

1. Do I need a lawyer? You have the right to legal representation. You can request a court-appointed attorney if you cannot afford one. However, legal representation is not required for your case.
2. Is there a dress code for court appearances? The court is a formal environment, so appropriate attire is expected. Avoid clothing with holes, tank tops, halter tops, or revealing garments. Do not wear items with offensive language or images. Shirts should be tucked in, and remove sunglasses or hats before entering.
3. What should I expect when arriving at the courthouse? Be prepared for a brief wait in line at the entrance. You'll pass through a metal detector upon entry. Empty your pockets, and all carried items will be scanned. Metal-toed footwear may need to be removed.
4. What do I do after security? Enter the courtroom and be seated. Standing against walls or at the back is not permitted. The Magistrate will provide instructions once everyone has entered. The judge may share guidelines before calling the docket.
5. Will my trial begin immediately? Yes, your court date is scheduled for both arraignment and trial. If you need additional preparation time or wish to hire an attorney, you may request a continuance from the judge.

If you miss your court appearance or fail to pay fines, the judge may issue an alias warrant and suspend your driving privileges.
