Is your tap water safe? Yes, your municipal water meets all Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) health standards. Our utility provider has tested for over 57 potential contaminants that might be present in flowing water. The State and EPA require regular testing and reporting of our results. We're pleased to report that our water passed all required tests.

As shown in the charts on the back, only 11 contaminants were detected, all at levels considered safe. Results of unregulated contaminant testing are available upon request.

Water Source Information: Your surface water comes from Harpeth Valley Electrical power District, which draws from the Cumberland River. We work diligently to protect our water supply from contamination, collaborating with the State to evaluate potential vulnerabilities.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has completed a Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) Report for untreated water sources serving this system. The SWAP Report identifies vulnerability levels of untreated water to potential contamination.

To ensure safe municipal water, all public systems treat and routinely test their water. Sources are rated as moderately susceptible, moderately vulnerable, or slightly vulnerable based on geological factors and human activities near the water source. Mallory Valley Utility District sources are classified as reasonably susceptible to potential contamination.

Why are there contaminants in my water? All municipal water, including bottled water, can reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of certain contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Community Involvement: The District's Board of Commissioners and Management Team meets the last Friday of each month at 1:00 p.m. at the District office (465 Duke Drive). Board meetings are open to the public. To address the Board, placement on the meeting agenda is required.

Commissioners serve four-year terms. Board vacancies are filled by Mayoral appointment from three candidates recommended by the Board. Customer complaint decisions made by the Board under the District's complaint policy may be reviewed by the Utility Management Review Board of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation according to Section 7-82-702(7) of Tennessee Code Annotated.

1. How is water hardness measured? Water hardness is typically measured in grains per gallon (gpg) or parts per million (ppm). The USGS classifies water with 0-3 gpg as soft, 3-7 gpg as moderately hard, 7-10 gpg as hard, and over 10 gpg as very hard.
2. What causes water hardness? Hardness is caused primarily by dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals picked up as water passes through limestone and chalk deposits.
3. How do contaminants like Cyanide affect health? Cyanide exposure through water can cause harmful health effects including headaches, rapid breathing, and in severe cases, nervous system damage.
4. Can home filters remove DCPA di-acid degradate? Most standard carbon filters cannot effectively remove DCPA degradates. Specialized reverse osmosis systems may be more effective.
5. What is Tetrahydrofuran and why is it concerning? Tetrahydrofuran is an industrial solvent that may enter water supplies through industrial discharge. Long-term exposure concerns include potential liver damage.
