Department Overview: A Superintendent, appointed by the Selectmen, serves as the Department's leader. Responsibilities include managing personnel for Highway, Water, Sewerage, Transfer Station, Wastewater Treatment Plant, Cemetery, and Equipment Maintenance departments.
Three foremen oversee Highway, Water and Sewerage, and the Wastewater Treatment Plant operations. Highway staff maintain bridges, public roads, grounds, parks, and recreation fields (except those under school department jurisdiction).
Equipment is housed and maintained at the Town Garage under DPW supervision. The Superintendent handles equipment purchase, maintenance, and procurement specifications. External contractors may be hired when deemed necessary.
Transfer Station: The facility includes a recycling area, with mandatory recycling implemented in 1992. Open to Medfield residents at specified times, with hours and permit information available at the Town Garage.
Additional Responsibilities: The Superintendent advises the Planning Board on street development and subdivision evaluation to ensure quality public utility installation. Support is also provided to the Board of Health, Water and Sewerage Board, and Selectmen on Public Works matters.
Single Stream Recycling: Medfield adopted single stream recycling effective January 6, 2010, eliminating the need to sort recyclables into separate containers. All recyclable materials can be placed in one container and brought to the transfer station for proper disposal.
