The EPA establishes strict regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safe consumption. Last year, MVD conducted comprehensive testing for over 95 different contaminants, including inorganic substances (metals, salts), organic chemicals, and radioactive materials.

The data presented typically shows only substances detected in your 2017 water supply or earlier. All natural water sources contain some level of contaminants that, at lower concentrations, generally pose no health risks. Complete elimination of all impurities would be prohibitively expensive and often unnecessary for public health protection.

Certain naturally occurring minerals can actually enhance water taste and provide beneficial nutrients in small amounts. Unless otherwise indicated, the testing information presented is from the previous year. EPA and State regulations allow some contaminants to be monitored less frequently than annually when concentrations remain stable over time or when systems are deemed low-risk for certain contamination types.

The terminology in water quality reports can be technical - explanations for all terms and abbreviations can be found in supplementary materials available from MVD upon request.
