The Montville Township Water Department operates from the Municipal Building at 195 Changebridge Street. Questions about water quality reports should be directed to Mr. John Perry, Director, at (973) 331-3330. The Township Committee holds regular meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays monthly at 8:00 PM in the Municipal Building.

Additional water program information is available online at www.montvillenj.org. This report provides details on water sources, contents, and compliance with EPA and State standards.

Certain populations may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than others. Individuals with compromised immune systems, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, elderly persons, and infants face higher health risks.

Montville's water comes from three primary sources:

  • Township's two Indian Street Wells (approximately 90% of supply)
  • Jersey City reservoir via River Road pumping facilities
  • Passaic Valley Water Commission through Lincoln Park water system

Both Jersey City and PVWC provide treated potable water that supplements local supplies during peak demand periods. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has completed a Source Water Assessment Report for Montville's system, available at www.state.NJ.us/dep/swap or by contacting NJDEP's Bureau of Safe Drinking Water at (609) 292-5550.

All water sources, including bottled water, naturally contain some level of contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-(800) 426-4791.

Water sources (tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.

To ensure tap water safety, EPA regulations limit certain contaminants in public water systems. Montville treats water according to these standards. The FDA establishes similar limits for bottled water to provide comparable public health protection.

Montville Twp MUA Municipal Water Report Info

Montville Township was established in 1867 from territory separated from Pequannock. It borders Pequannock township to the north, Pequannock township and the Passaic River to the east, and the Rockaway River to the south and west, sharing its western border with Boonton Township.

The township spans approximately four miles wide and nine miles long. It contains more tillable land than either Boonton or Pequannock relative to its area. The southernmost portion, known as Pine Brook flats, forms a peninsula nearly surrounded by the Rockaway and Passaic Rivers. This flat tract features sandy loam soil without stones that becomes highly productive when properly cultivated.

Located about thirteen miles from Newark, Pine Brook connects via a well-maintained road that includes Telford pavement for most of the distance. The remainder of the township primarily consists of clay-based loam soil that produces excellent grass, grain, vegetables, and fruit crops.

Central Montville farmers historically supplied Newark markets with milk, while other areas produced butter, eggs, poultry, pork, beef, hay, and straw. Many farmers invested in fruit orchards, particularly apple and pear varieties that generally yielded good returns.

The township's landscape is predominantly rolling, with rougher, hilly woodlands in the northern region. The Waughaw Mountains and Turkey Mountain form the highest elevations in the northeast, while the Hook Mountain range occupies the southeast. Between Hook Mountain and the Passaic River lies a fertile farming section.

Both the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad and Morris Canal traverse the township from west to east. Small waterways include Stony Brook in the northwest, which empties into the Rockaway River above Powerville, and another creek that originates near Turkey Mountain, flowing through Montville town and down the Valley to the Rockaway River.
