Wanaque (pronounced WANNA-kyew) is a borough located in Passaic County, New Jersey. According to the 2013 Census, the borough's population was approximately 11,208 residents. The borough was officially incorporated on February 23, 1918, when Pompton Township divided into three separate boroughs, including Bloomingdale and Ringwood, following a referendum held on March 22, 1918.
Geographically, Wanaque is situated at coordinates (41.039646, -74.289323) and includes neighborhoods known as Wanaque (formerly Midvale) and Haskell. Each area maintains its own ZIP code and is served by separate post offices.
According to local historical records, the name "Wanaque" likely derives from a Lenni Lenape Native American word meaning "rest and repose." Another popular interpretation suggests it means "place of sassafras." Historians have discovered various historical spellings in old deeds and documents, including Wynokie, Wynocky, and Wynockie.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the borough encompasses a total area of 9.2 square miles (23.9 km²), with 8.0 square miles (20.7 km²) being land and 1.2 square miles (3.2 km²) or 13.35% consisting of water bodies.
