About Us
The Morton Grove Water Department is dedicated to delivering residents with reliable, high-quality municipal water. The department employs advanced testing equipment and sophisticated methodologies to ensure water quality. Morton Grove's water exceeds both State and Federal standards.
This Annual Customer Confidence Report, required by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), explains where Morton Grove water comes from, its contents, and how it compares to regulatory standards. Morton Grove purchases 100% of its water from the City of Chicago, with Lake Michigan serving as the primary source for Chicago and 123 suburban communities.
Water reaches Morton Grove through several source mains from Chicago. The water undergoes chlorination at two pumping stations before distribution to customers. Sources of tap water (both from taps and bottles) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial pollutants from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals from natural sources, urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, and farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential use
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and waste systems
- Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
The EPA regulates public water systems to ensure tap water safety, while the FDA sets limits for bottled water contaminants. All water may contain trace amounts of contaminants, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).
Immunocompromised individuals, cancer patients, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly persons, and infants may be more vulnerable to water contaminants and should consult healthcare providers. Lead exposure guidance is available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
For questions about this report, please contact Public Works Director Andy DeMonte at 847/470-5235 or attend a Town Board Meeting held at 7:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday monthly at Village Hall, 6101 Capulina Avenue.
