About Us
The Village of Mount Prospect is committed to delivering reliable, safe municipal water to residents and businesses. Each year, we prepare a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) to help residents make informed decisions about their tap water usage.
This report applies to those served by the Village-owned water distribution system. Illinois American Water Company customers receive a separate CCR and can contact them at 1-800-422-2782. The CCR is required by the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act amendments and summarizes water sources, treatment processes, and regulatory compliance.
Our water comes from Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes. The City of Chicago's Jardine Water Purification Plant treats and purifies this water before it reaches the Northwest Suburban Municipal Joint Action Water Agency (NSMJAWA) reservoirs. NSMJAWA then pumps water to Mount Prospect and six other northwest suburban communities through large transmission mains that terminate at three receiving structures throughout the Village.
Previously, Mount Prospect relied on up to seventeen deep wells. Currently, only five wells remain for emergency or standby use. Lake Michigan is the third largest Great Lake by area and second by volume. As water travels over land or through ground, it naturally dissolves minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
