Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:
Muskingum County Water and Sewer Municipal Water Company and CDCWhy does my water usage appear higher this month compared to previous months?
Consider your activities over the past month. Did you host overnight guests? Did you fill a swimming pool or wash vehicles? Did you increase lawn watering or sprinkler system usage? If no specific event explains the increased consumption, you might have a leak.
How can I determine if my plumbing has a leak?
Turn off all water fixtures and water-using appliances including ice makers. Locate your water meter box and record the reading. Wait at least 2 hours without using any water. After this period, check the meter again. If the numbers have changed at all, you likely have a leak somewhere in your system.
How do I read my water meter?
Open the lid on your water meter box. Lift the black cover on the meter face. Wait for the digital display to activate, which may take several seconds. A series of numbers will appear - read these from left to right to get your current meter reading.
How do I shut off my water to make repairs?
Most residents have a hand valve (shut-off valve) located inside or near the meter box. This valve may resemble a yellow lever or appear similar to a water spigot valve. Once located, close it by turning the valve handle.
I missed my water bill payment this month. Will my service be disconnected?
Service interruption may occur for any account balance that is 30 days or more overdue.
How do I establish an account for new water service?
We require in-person visits to our office to establish new accounts. Renters need a valid lease/rental agreement while homeowners need a closing statement, warranty deed, or property tax valuation notice. All applicants must present a valid, government-issued photo ID. For properties with existing service taps and meters, a $100.00 fee is due at application time.
I never see technicians reading my water meter. Why?
We've installed digital, radio-read meters throughout our entire system. Physical access to the meter is no longer necessary to obtain readings.
