Odenville

This report is presented by the Utilities Board of the Town of Odenville to inform residents about their water quality. Each year, we report our ongoing efforts to improve water treatment processes and protect our valuable water resources. We're committed to providing high-quality water in sufficient quantities to meet community needs.

The Odenville Utilities Board currently supplies clean, safe water to over 30,000 residents throughout central St. Clair County. Our water comes from eight groundwater wells drawing from three primary aquifers: Tuscumbia Limestone/Ft. Payne Chert (Well #3), Hartselle Sandstone (Well #7), and Floyd Shale and Bangor Limestone (Wells #4, 5, 8 & 9). Wells #10 and #11 are developed in the Knox Group and serve as primary sources for the northeastern part of our system, including Rainbow City.

Since November 30, 2011, the Odenville Utilities Board has supplemented our supply by purchasing water from the Coosa Valley Water Supply District (CVWSD). Their contaminant monitoring results are included in this report. Our source water protection plan is available for public viewing at our office, containing geological studies that detail aquifer size, underground water flow direction, travel time, and other important features.

All water, including bottled water, may contain small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity. The EPA regulates public water systems to ensure tap water safety, while FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water.

If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in water primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. While we provide quality water, we cannot control plumbing component materials. You can minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If concerned about lead, consider having your water tested. 1. How often is Odenville's water tested? Water is tested according to schedules set by EPA and state regulations, with some tests performed daily, others weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually.
2. What causes water hardness in Odenville? Water hardness comes from dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, picked up naturally as groundwater passes through limestone formations in the area.
3. How does the utility treat for the identified contaminants? Odenville uses a multi-barrier approach including disinfection, filtration, and chemical treatments to address contaminants and ensure water safety.
4. Should residents use home water filters? While municipal water meets safety standards, home filtration can address aesthetic preferences and provide additional protection against contaminants of concern.
