About Us
The Old Bridge MUA sources its municipal water through dual systems: proprietary groundwater wells and surface water purchased from Middlesex Water Company. Middlesex obtains surface water from the Delaware and Raritan Canal as well as Jazz Run and Rounded Valley Reservoirs. This surface water is captured at an intake station in New Brunswick, processed at their Edison plant, and then delivered to Old Bridge through distribution mains.
The groundwater component comes from eight wells managed by Old Bridge MUA. These wells tap into two distinct aquifers: the shallower Old Bridge Aquifer (approximately 100 feet deep) and the deeper Farrington Aquifer (approximately 400 feet deep). Water from both sources undergoes advanced treatment protocols to remove contaminants and improve aesthetic qualities like taste, odor, and color before entering the distribution system.
Daily, Old Bridge MUA supplies approximately 6.5 million gallons of treated water to customers - producing about 3.5 million gallons from their own facilities and purchasing 3 million gallons from Middlesex Water Company. These water sources blend within the distribution network. Additionally, Old Bridge MUA sells roughly 600,000 gallons daily to Aberdeen Township and maintains emergency interconnections with Perth Amboy and Marlboro Township.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) completed Source Water Assessment Reports for all public water systems in 2004. The Authority was established on November 4, 1985, through legislation by the Township of Old Bridge. It formed through the merger of The Old Bridge Township Sewerage Authority (OBTSA) and the previous Old Bridge Municipal Utilities Authority (OBMUA), which separately managed wastewater collection/treatment and water treatment/distribution respectively.
This consolidation has enhanced operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness under the Municipal Utilities Authorities Law, specifically N.J.S.A. 40:14-20. While OBMUA functions as a public entity, it's entirely funded through water and wastewater service revenues rather than municipal or state tax dollars.
