About Us
In 2016, approximately 65% of Pomona's municipal water was extracted from groundwater wells. These wells draw from three primary aquifers: Chino Pot, Six Basins, and Spadra Basin, located throughout Pomona and Claremont.
Water treatment varies based on contaminant types and concentrations. The city operates two airflow stripping facilities to remove volatile organic compounds and four ion exchange facilities for nitrate and perchlorate removal.
About 5% of water comes from the San Gabriel Mountains, flowing through San Antonio Canyon. This source undergoes filtration and chlorine disinfection at the Open G. Pedley Filtration Plant in Claremont.
The remaining 30% is purchased from Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) and Three Valleys Municipal Water District (TVMWD). MWD imports surface water from the Colorado River via its 242-mile aqueduct from Lake Havasu, and from Northern California through the 441-mile California Aqueduct. These supplies are treated at MWD's Weymouth Plant in La Verne and TVMWD's Miramar Plant in Claremont.
