Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

• Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals (naturally occurring or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming)
• Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture and residential usage
• Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally
• Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems

The Prescott Valley Water System serves approximately 48,460 residents through four distinct water systems, delivering an average of 5.14 million gallons daily. Our water comes from underground aquifers and is chlorinated before distribution. We maintain a chlorine residual of 0.20-0.77 mg/l to ensure the system remains bacteria-free.

Our service areas include:

• PV Water (Upper) System: serves 36,180+ residents through 15,075 connections, pumping 3.85 million gallons daily
• PV Water (Lower) System: serves 6,278+ residents through 2,616 connections, pumping 642,400 gallons daily
• Mingus West Water System: established 1999, serves 259+ residents through 108 connections including the Yavapai County Fairgrounds, pumping 80,000 gallons daily
• Viewpoint Water System: established 1996, serves 5,743+ residents through 2,393 connections, pumping 565,800 gallons daily

To ensure tap water safety, EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems. Last year, we conducted over 3,000 tests for more than 65 water contaminants, meeting all state and federal requirements.

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons (cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, some elderly, and infants) should seek advice from healthcare providers about drinking water. If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. While we provide high-quality water, we cannot control plumbing component materials. When water sits unused for several hours, minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking.
