About Us
This report aims to inform you about the quality of water and services we provide daily. Our mission is to deliver safe, dependable water flow to all residents. We continually strive to enhance our water treatment processes and protect our valuable water resources.
The Prestonsburg City's Resources Commission Water Treatment Plant processes up to 5 million gallons daily, utilizing the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River as its surface water source. Our treatment includes conventional methods: coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, corrosion control, and fluoridation for dental health.
A comprehensive source water assessment has been completed and is available in the Big Sandy Area Development District Water Assessment Plan. Key vulnerability factors include underground storage tanks, hazardous waste handlers, waste water treatment facilities, and highway connections.
Water Quality Facts:
- A single dripping faucet (60 drops/minute) can waste over 100 gallons monthly
- Research shows that one glass of water effectively stops midnight hunger cravings for most dieters
- Our distribution system includes 28 water tanks, 29 pump stations, and over 320 miles of water lines
Source Water Information:
Our municipal water comes from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and sometimes radioactive material, while potentially collecting substances from animal presence and human activity. EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety.
Lead Information:
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health complications, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily enters drinking water through service lines and home plumbing materials. While we provide quality water, we cannot control the materials used in household plumbing. After water sits for several hours, minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking.
Health Considerations:
Some individuals may be more susceptible to water contaminants than others. People with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS, elderly persons, and infants—should seek guidance from healthcare providers regarding their drinking water consumption.
