About Us
What is a Water Quality Report? Illinois American Water issues a report annually describing the quality of your municipal water in compliance with state and United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regulations. This report aims to enhance awareness about drinking water standards and highlight the importance of protecting our water resources.
Our advanced laboratory in Belleville, Illinois conducts thousands of tests annually, monitoring water quality at every stage of treatment and delivery. In 2017, we tested for hundreds of contaminants, including those with federal and state maximum allowable levels. This report provides an overview of last year's water quality results.
The source water for the DuPage community comes from Lake Michigan, purchased from the City of Chicago through the DuPage Water Commission and Village of Lisle. Illinois EPA considers all surface water sources potentially vulnerable to pollution, which necessitates mandatory treatment including coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection.
Primary pollution sources in Illinois lakes include agricultural runoff, septic systems, and shoreline erosion. The IEPA has completed a source water assessment for Chicago, which considers all surface water susceptible to contamination. Chicago has one near-shore intake vulnerable to storm water runoff and marina impacts, while two offshore intakes are positioned far enough that shoreline influences are minimal.
Environmental Stewardship: Water is one of our most precious natural resources. Our conservation efforts include educational programs, community events, and environmental partnerships. We reach thousands of students yearly through school visits and our Mobile Education Center, which offers hands-on water testing experiences. We support STEM education initiatives and participate in watershed celebrations like "It's Our River Day" and various river cleanup projects.
Through our Environmental Grant Program, we've awarded over $195,000 to 51+ Illinois water protection projects since 2009. We continue our partnership with Great Rivers Land Trust to reduce sedimentation of the Piasa Creek and Mississippi River – a model program recognized by the USEPA. Our pharmaceutical disposal programs have prevented improper disposal of medications across more than 35 locations statewide.
Internally, our facilities utilize energy-efficient technologies and implement recycling programs. We incorporate native plantings on company properties to reduce water usage and maintenance costs.
