Illinois Water Utility Companies

Illinois American Water's Pekin District provides groundwater from eight strategically positioned wells throughout the service area. Two wells draw water from the San Koty aquifer while five others extract from the Holly formation. An aquifer is essentially a porous underground formation (typically sand and gravel) saturated with water.

Most wells deliver water directly to the distribution system after treatment chemical addition. Due to detected low levels of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) in untreated water, wells #1 and #3 have been equipped with activated carbon filtration systems that reduce VOCs below concerning levels.

The sandy soil composition in Pekin makes wells vulnerable to surface contamination from industrial or other sources. Through collaborative efforts between Illinois American Water, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), and the City of Pekin, a wellhead protection program was established under local ordinance. All leaks must be promptly reported to Illinois American Water.

The IEPA has completed a source water assessment for the Pekin system, available upon request by contacting Pamela Ingersoll-Goede, Water Quality Supervisor at 309-566-4164. To view a summary of the completed Source Water Assessments, including information on source water importance, contamination susceptibility, and protection initiatives, visit the Illinois EPA website at http://www.epa.state.il.us/cgi-bin/wp/swap-fact-sheets.pl

Environmental Stewardship
Water is one of our planet's most precious natural resources. Our environmental protection efforts include student education programs, community events, environmental partnerships, and internal initiatives.

Student Education: Illinois American Water reaches thousands of students annually through educational programs. Our water quality team visits local schools to demonstrate water treatment processes. Our Mobile Education Center (MEC) offers hands-on water testing and interactive lesson plans, supporting Illinois STEM education initiatives. Students participate in annual community events like the Clean Water Celebration in Peoria and Water Festival in Godfrey.

Community Events: We actively participate in "It's Our River Day" activities each September throughout Illinois, promoting education, recreation, and conservation within Illinois watersheds. Our staff volunteers at the Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair in Grafton and contributes to river cleanup initiatives including the Illinois River Sweep, Vermillion River Clean Up, and Living Lands and Waters-Great Mississippi River Clean Up.

Environmental Partnerships: Through our Environmental Grant Program, over $195,000 has been awarded to more than 51 Illinois water source protection projects since 2009. In 2017 alone, we provided over $20,000 for seven environmental projects focused on improving, restoring, and protecting water resources in our communities. We maintain an ongoing partnership with Great Rivers Land Trust to reduce sedimentation of Piasa Creek and the Mississippi River—a collaboration recognized as exemplary by the USEPA. Our Champaign County team partners with the Mahomet Aquifer Consortium to protect this vital resource.

IL American-Streator Municipal Water Report Info

Streator is a distinctive community located less than 100 miles southwest of Chicago, strategically positioned near major transportation networks. The city is served by three railroads (two Class 1) and sits within the Interstate Highway triangle formed by I-39, I-55, and I-80.

Over the years, Streator has maintained relatively controlled growth, making navigation around town convenient. The city enjoys a lower cost-of-living compared to most northern Illinois communities, offering affordability for residents and retirees alike. With less traffic congestion, shorter commute times, and improved safety compared to larger metropolitan areas, Streator combines small-town living with economic vitality.

Historically, Streator featured numerous ethnic neighborhoods—Slovak, Polish, German, Italian, Welsh and others—with residents drawn to various mining and manufacturing opportunities. While the city has become more integrated in modern times, it proudly maintains its heritage as home to North America's first Slovak Catholic Church and first Slovak Lutheran Church.

Streator nurtures entrepreneurs, innovators, artists, and scientists. It's the birthplace (1913) of Burt "Butch" Baskin who, after graduating from Streator High School and the University of Illinois, founded an ice cream business that merged with Irv Robbins' company to create Baskin-Robbins. The city also claims Clyde Tombaugh, discoverer of Pluto, and Clarence Mulford, author of Hop-a-Long Cassidy books, among its notable natives.

Today, Streator supports small business startups and local innovators through various economic development programs, including a business incubator housed in the former Illinois National Guard Armory on West Bridge Street. Information about the Streator Incubator is available on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/streatorinc.

While some neighborhood businesses remain, retail activity concentrates in two areas: along State Highway 23 between the Norfolk-Southern Railroad tracks and northern city limits, and in the central business district from Westgate to the BNSF Railway along Illinois Route 18.

Two regional healthcare providers operate facilities in Streator: OSF (Order of St. Francis) and Illinois Valley Community Hospital. The OSF-Center for Health in Streator features a modern healthcare campus offering rural healthcare, telemedicine, wellness programs, 24/7 emergency services, and comprehensive outpatient care connected to OSF facilities in Ottawa, Pontiac, Peoria, and Bloomington.
