We're pleased to report that this year, just like in previous years, your tap water met all USEPA and state health standards for municipal water. This report summarizes the quality of water provided last year, including details about its source, contents, and how it compares to regulatory standards.

Streamwood experienced no violations of contaminant levels or any other water quality standards. Este informe contiene información muy importante sobre el agua que usted consume. Tradúzcalo o hable con alguien que lo entienda bien. ("This report contains very important information. Translate it, or speak with someone who understands it.")

We want our valued customers to be informed about their water quality. If you'd like more information, please feel welcome to attend any regularly scheduled meetings. Village Board meetings typically occur on the first and third Thursday of each month. Visit www.streamwood.org for meeting times. For questions about this report, contact water department operator Ben Salzmann at (630) 736-3850.

The source water assessment for our supplier was completed by the Illinois EPA. For a copy of this information, visit Public Works or call the water operator at (630) 483-4491. For an overview of the completed Source Water Assessments, including information on Source Water Importance, Contamination Susceptibility, and recommended Source Water Protection Initiatives, visit the Illinois EPA website at www.epa.state.il.us/cgi-bin/wp/swap-fact-sheets.pl.

Source of Municipal Water

Streamwood's municipal water is purchased surface water from the City of Chicago (Lake Michigan). Chicago treats Lake Michigan water through two facilities, with the Jardine Water Purification Plant serving northern areas including Streamwood. Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake completely within the United States, bordering Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. It's the second largest Great Lake by volume (1,180 cubic miles) and third largest by area.

Potential Contaminants

Sources of tap water (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and radioactive materials and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity. Potential contaminants include:

  • Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals, which can occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
  • Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants that may be naturally occurring or result from oil/gas production and mining

The USEPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure drinking safety. FDA regulations set similar limits for bottled water. All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Immunocompromised persons—such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, and some elderly and infants—may be particularly susceptible to infections. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their drinking water. Guidelines on reducing infection risk from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the USEPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Streamwood maintains groundwater wells for emergency backup purposes. These wells are tested monthly and water samples are analyzed to meet IEPA quality standards. Emergency well activation was not necessary during 2015.
