In December 2002, Rowland Water District completed a source water assessment of the Colorado River and State Water Project supplies. The Colorado River water is considered most vulnerable to recreational activities, urban/stormwater runoff, increasing residential development, and wastewater discharge. The State Water Project has been identified as most susceptible to urban/stormwater runoff, wildlife presence, agricultural activities, recreational use, and wastewater impacts.
A copy of this assessment can be obtained by contacting the District at (213) 217-6850. Besides these primary sources, Rowland Water District maintains supplemental water reserves in the Central San Gabriel Groundwater Basin and Central Basin.
All water, including bottled varieties, can be expected to contain at least small amounts of certain contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more details about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land surfaces or through underground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.

In fulfilling this mission, the District places tremendous emphasis on providing a premium water supply.
Our History: The Rowland Water District service area covers 17.2 square miles in southeastern Los Angeles County. Currently, the District supplies potable and recycled water to approximately 58,000 residents through 13,500 service connections across portions of Rowland Heights, Hacienda Heights, La Puente, and the cities of Industry and West Covina.
Established in 1953 under the California County Water District Law (Division 12 Water Code), the community voted to form the District to ensure a safe and reliable water supply. Initially serving 200 local farmers and ranchers, the District has experienced consistent growth, and today the service area comprises a mix of commercial, light industrial, and residential zones.
Economic growth projections anticipate a 1-3% annual increase in undeveloped areas within the District. Governance comes from a publicly elected five-member Board of Directors who hold regular public meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM. A staff of twenty-five full-time employees manages daily administrative and operational functions, with the District's operating plan and operational staff supervised and certified by the California Department of Public Health.
