What is the source of my water? The sources of municipal water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and groundwater wells. As water moves across land surfaces or through underground soil layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and may pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.
Source Water Assessment: The Missouri Department of Natural Resources conducted a source water assessment to evaluate potential contamination risks to our water supplies. This process included mapping source water location boundaries for each well or surface water intake, followed by a contamination inventory within these areas to assess potential threats. Assessment maps and information sheets are available online at http://drinkingwater.Missouri.Edu/swip/swipmaps/pwssid.Htm. To access your system's maps, you'll need the state-assigned ID code shown at the top of this report. These Source Water Inventory Project resources provide a foundation for developing more comprehensive source water protection plans.
Why does my water contain contaminants? Municipal water, including bottled varieties, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of certain contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Is our water system meeting regulatory requirements? The Missouri Department of Natural Resources regulates our water system and requires regular testing to ensure safety. Our system ID number MO3010728 is used to track our test results. Last year, we tested for various contaminants with detectable results shown in this report. Are there special precautions some people should take? Certain populations may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general public. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding municipal water consumption. Sedalia Downtown Development Inc. (SDDI) is a non-profit organization established in 1993 to champion and support revitalization efforts for the historic buildings and heritage of downtown Sedalia, Missouri. SDDI collaborates with property owners, the City of Sedalia, and state and federal agencies to foster economic development and historic preservation throughout the central business district.
Mission Statement: Sedalia Downtown Development, Inc. will unite the entire Sedalia community for economic and cultural revitalization of the downtown area.
Vision Statement: "Downtown Sedalia is a vibrant, prosperous business district filled with unique shops of arts, antiques and one-of-a-kind items that attract large numbers of area shoppers and visitors. With consistent design elements from sidewalks and street intersections to signage and landscaping improvements, the downtown area is recognized as a true 'district' with a distinct sense of place. The renovation and preservation of architectural treasures provide increased opportunities for people to work and live within the area. As the seat of city and county government, downtown maintains its professional base while attracting tourism through its rich heritage. Downtown Sedalia serves as a center of commerce, culture and entertainment where merchants know customers by name and welcome visitors with genuine warmth and hospitality."
The City and SDDI were honored by the State of Missouri's selection for the DREAM Initiative in 2006. Recent accomplishments include establishing the Mid-Town Tax Increment Financing District, rehabilitating the Furnell Buildings into mixed-use space using Missouri Housing Development Commission funding, securing Home Repair Opportunity program financing for qualifying residential properties, completing three phases of the Ohio Avenue streetscape project, and planning the 2010 restoration of the Commerce Building into residential units.
Sedalia was founded by George R. Smith, who purchased 503 acres and filed the first town plat in 1857, originally naming it Sedville. He began selling lots as early as 1858 for up to $75 each. The town was formally established as "Sedalia" in October 1860, and in 1861, became the terminus of the Pacific Railroad, welcoming its first train passengers in January of that year.
