About Us
In 2017, the Department of Environmental Protection conducted a Source Water Assessment on the City of Altamonte Springs, our municipal water supplier. This assessment aimed to identify potential contamination sources near their wells. You can view the results at www.dep.state.fl.us/swapp through the FDEP Supply Water Assessment and Protection Program website.
The EPA requires you to know that your water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals, either naturally occurring or from urban runoff, wastewater discharge, oil/gas production, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from resource extraction activities
To ensure your tap water is safe, the EPA establishes regulations limiting certain contaminants in public water systems. FDA regulations set similar limits for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection. All water sources, including bottled water, can reasonably be expected to contain at least minimal amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
