Georgia Water Utility Companies

The City of Smyrna is committed to delivering safe water that meets or surpasses all federal and state quality requirements. This report covers all assessments performed from January 1 through December 31, 2017.

Smyrna purchases water from the Cobb County - Marietta Water Authority (CCMWA), which has been certified by the State to provide reliable and safe public water to Cobb County and its wholesale customers. This annual report details the quality of water delivered by CCMWA, including information about water sources, contaminants, and potential health risks.

We're pleased to present our annual water quality report and assure you that your water is safe. If you have questions about this report, please contact the Smyrna Utilities Department at 678-631-5338.

The Cobb County - Marietta Water Authority utilizes two surface water sources that supply two treatment facilities:

  • The Wyckoff Treatment Division draws from Allatoona Lake, a Corps of Engineers reservoir in north Cobb, south Cherokee and south Bartow counties
  • The Quarles Treatment Division obtains water from the Chattahoochee River

The CCMWA and Atlanta Regional Commission completed a source water assessment identifying potential contamination sources for our surface water supplies. This information helps understand potential contamination risks and prioritize water source protection. A Source Water Assessment provides:

  • Delineation of water supply watersheds for each intake
  • Inventory of potential contamination sources
  • Determination of water source vulnerability to identified contamination sources
  • Enhanced public awareness and understanding of watershed concerns

For more details on this project, visit the Source Water Assessment page at http://www.atlantaregional.org or request information by mail from the Atlanta Regional Commission.

Smyrna Municipal Water Report Info
The EPA provides comprehensive resources about water quality standards, testing protocols, and health guidelines for public water systems. Their integrated water analysis tools can help residents understand potential contaminants in their local water supply and the associated health risks.

The agency establishes maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for regulated substances and requires regular monitoring to ensure compliance. Smyrna's water quality reports are based on these standards and testing procedures.

Why do water utilities provide annual reports?
Federal regulations mandate all U.S. water utilities to deliver yearly water quality reports to customers. Much of the language in these reports follows government-required formatting.

Who governs the Water Board?
The Board consists of three members appointed for staggered terms by the Mayor and Council. Board members elect their own officers. Current members include: Mr. Ronnie Stinson, Chairman; Preston Buchanan, Vice Chairman; and Mike Limerick, Secretary. The mayor serves as superintendent of the Water Works, Gas & Sewer Board and oversees daily operations.

Is Smyrna's water classified as "hard" or "soft"?
Smyrna has moderately "hard" water, which can affect appliance efficiency and soap effectiveness.

Does our municipal supply contain fluoride?
Yes. Fluoride is added after chlorination in the form of hydrofluorocyclic acid. The concentration results in approximately 1 ppm fluoride, which the American Dental Association considers optimal for dental health.

What's the procedure for water shutoff during home repairs?
Your meter has a shutoff valve requiring a special key. We can dispatch someone to turn off your meter at no charge. Please don't attempt to turn it off yourself, as these valves break easily. Valve damage repairs cost $95.00. For a manual valve installation on your side of the meter, similar to an outdoor faucet valve, you'll need to hire a plumber.

Who handles garbage service questions?
The Utility Office bills and collects the $12.40 garbage fee for the City of Jacksonville, transferring funds to the City monthly. Since the Utility Office only handles billing and collection, direct all service issues to City Hall (435-7611) or AWS (237-7219).

What is the Health & Sanitation fee?
The H&S fee ($5.64) is assessed by the City of Jacksonville for landfill maintenance and street debris removal. It's not a service fee. The Water Works, Gas & Sewer Board collects this for the City government and transfers these funds monthly. Direct questions to City Hall (435-7611).

What payment methods are accepted?
We accept personal checks and cash. When paying by check, please note your account number. We cannot accept check/debit cards, credit cards, counter checks, or two-party checks. Bank draft service is now available.

Who do I contact about stray animals or garbage collection?
Call the Jacksonville Street Department (435-3560) to report stray dogs and request curbside pickup. Jacksonville enforces a leash law with fines for violations. Dog and cat licenses must be purchased by September 30 annually.
