Anything that goes down your kitchen sink, laundry drain, or bathroom fixtures ultimately enters our sewerage system. Treated wastewater is either recycled or safely released back into natural waterways. Improper disposal significantly impacts our ability to treat water and can damage infrastructure.

Everyone plays a vital role in supporting the treatment process through awareness of how our waste affects both treatment efficiency and environmental health. Remember, drains aren't disposal units – our sewer systems and treatment facilities cannot properly handle chemicals, trash, or fats.

Chemicals can harm treatment equipment and the environment, while solid waste and grease cause expensive backups and overflows. These issues create unsanitary conditions, unpleasant odors, and costly repairs for both South Burlington and homeowners.

Here's what to keep out of our sewers:

  • Chemical waste (motor oil, pesticides, cleaners, medications, paints) – take to CSWD Environmental Depot at 1011 Airport Parkway
  • Paper/plastic trash (paper towels, tissues, feminine products, diapers) – dispose in garbage
  • Fats/oils/grease – seal in containers for trash disposal

By considering what goes down your drain, you help prevent blockages in both your plumbing and city infrastructure, ensuring sewage arriving at treatment plants can be properly processed for safe reuse or environmental release.
