Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:
Troy Utilities Municipal Water Company and CDC
- How often do I receive my water and sewer bill? Homeowners typically receive bills quarterly; larger users (certain businesses, apartment complexes, condominiums, etc.) receive monthly bills. Water and sewer bills must display the property owner's name. Bills can be sent to an alternate address upon request, but the owner's name must appear on the invoice. The property owner remains responsible for all account charges.
- What should I do if my meter isn't functioning? Contact the Water Division (532-6050) immediately to report this issue. If necessary, your meter will be replaced at no cost to you. However, you'll still be charged for water and sewer usage up until the repair date. Note that there is a fee for repairing meters damaged by freezing, as residents are responsible for protecting meters from freezing temperatures.
- How do I obtain a final bill when selling my property? Final meter readings are scheduled only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The owner or Realtor must contact the billing office to schedule a final reading within 5 days before the closing date (no exceptions). Call the Business Office at 508-532-5605. The new owner's information must be provided when making the appointment, along with a contact phone number. A $20.00 fee for the final reading will be included in your final bill. If you miss the appointment, the next available time will be on the next scheduled reading day, and a missed appointment fee will apply.
Final bills will be prepared for pickup 1 hour after the scheduled appointment. You may call our office to confirm the bill is ready. Final bills can be picked up in the office with a signature, faxed with a signed request, or emailed with delivery and read receipt requested. Payment is due within 7 days of the final bill date and must be paid with cash or certified check to the Treasurer's office. A daily interest rate of 14% is assessed by the Treasurer's Office for each day the bill remains unpaid.
Most leaks occur in toilets due to faulty valves and ball cocks. These are often silent and difficult to detect. The Water Division provides dye tablets to help identify leaks but isn't responsible for the condition of pipes and fixtures on private property. For high bills resulting from significant water leaks exceeding twice the normal average for the previous three years, residents may submit an abatement application with required documentation to determine eligibility.
