HISTORY and HERITAGE
The City of Davis occupies land originally inhabited by Patwin Native Americans. Disease devastated much of the native population in the 1830s, causing many survivors to leave the area. European settlers began arriving in the 1840s, with William Wolfskill receiving a substantial land grant from the Mexican government in 1842 that stretched from present-day Vacaville to South Davis.
Jerome and Mary Davis owned a 12,000-acre ranch that later became the foundation for the City of Davis, which bears their name. During the 1860s, California Pacific Railroad purchased a large portion of the Davis ranch. Davis Junction began operations in 1868, serving as a crucial stop connecting the eastern Bay Area to Central Valley farmlands and Sacramento, enhancing transportation for agricultural products.
A north-south railroad line further elevated Davisville (as it was known until 1907) as a regional transportation hub. The town's growth accelerated with increased railroad activity. In 1908, the University State Farm opened near Davis as a teaching institution operated by UC Berkeley's College of Agriculture.
A devastating fire in November 1916 demonstrated the need for formal municipal services, leading to the city's incorporation in 1917 as a commission-style government. The 1920s saw development of planning commissions, establishment of a City Council, and installation of paved streets, lighting, sewage and water systems.
In 1962, the university became a general campus in the University of California system. While subsequent decades brought significant population growth, the community eventually adopted a more growth-conscious attitude, contributing to Davis's reputation as one of America's most bicycle-friendly cities.
Today, Davis is a university-oriented community of over 66,000 residents, with strong connections between students and residents reinforcing the distinctive college-town atmosphere that has developed over the years.
