About Us
SOURCES OF MUNICIPAL WATER AND CONTAMINANTS:
Vacaville's water supply comes from multiple sources: surface water and groundwater wells. In 2017, Pond Berryessa surface water (via Putah South Canal) provided 26% of the city's water usage, while Sacramento Delta surface water (from North Fresh Aqueduct) supplied 42%. The remaining 32% came from 11 deep groundwater wells.
Water treatment occurs at two facilities: the Vacaville Water Treatment Plant (VWTP), which handles PSC source water, and the North Bay Regional Water Treatment Plant (NBR), jointly owned by Vacaville and Fairfield, which processes both PSC and NBA source water.
POTENTIAL CONTAMINANTS IN SOURCE WATER INCLUDE:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage plants, septic systems, agriculture, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) from natural sources, urban runoff, industrial discharge, oil/gas production, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, runoff, and waste systems
- Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
The EPA and State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) set regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems and bottled water to ensure safety for public health.
