California Water Utility Companies

The sources of municipal water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can pick up substances resulting from animal presence or human activities.

To ensure tap water safety, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and the State Water Resources Control Board (State Board) establish regulations limiting specific contaminants in public water systems. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and California law also set similar limits for bottled water to protect public health.

Municipal water, including bottled varieties, can reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Contaminants that may be present in source water include:

  • Microbial Contaminants: Viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic Contaminants: Salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and Herbicides: From agricultural sources, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic Chemical Contaminants: Including synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive Contaminants: Naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining activities

For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the U.S. EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
