About Us
QUALITY WATER IS FOLSOM'S TOP PRIORITY
The City of Folsom is dedicated to delivering high-quality municipal water to all residents. Last year, as in previous years, our tap water met all U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and State water health requirements. We take extensive measures to protect our water sources and are proud to report that our system maintains compliance with all maximum contaminant levels and water quality standards.
Water quality specialists and certified treatment professionals monitor and test our water supply from source to tap using advanced equipment and state-certified laboratories. Testing occurs hourly, daily, monthly, quarterly, and annually as required by the California Water Board's Division of Municipal Water and the USEPA.
UNDERSTANDING THE CONSUMER CONFIDENCE REPORT
The Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) summarizes ongoing water quality testing results. Each year, the Water Board and USEPA require the City of Folsom to create and distribute this report to all water customers. The report compares our municipal water quality to state and federal standards.
YOUR WATER SOURCE
Folsom receives 100% of its water supply from Folsom Lake. Water drawn from the lake undergoes comprehensive treatment at the Folsom Water Treatment Plant before distribution to customers.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOUR WATER
All water sources (including tap and bottled water) come from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land surfaces or through soil, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.
Municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain small amounts of certain contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the USEPA's Safe Municipal Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).
Potential source water contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals that can be naturally occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff and residential uses
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential applications
- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that can be naturally occurring or result from oil/gas production and mining activities
To ensure tap water safety, the USEPA and Water Board establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Water Board regulations also set similar limits for bottled water to provide equal public health protection.
The City of Folsom conducted lead and copper sampling in July 2014 and found levels within all mandated standards. These contaminants can come from corrosion of household plumbing or natural deposits. Excess copper may cause gastrointestinal issues or kidney/liver damage with prolonged exposure, while lead exposure may affect child development and cause kidney problems or high blood pressure in adults.
