About Us
The New Jersey Division of Environmental Safety (DEP) has conducted comprehensive assessments of water sources supplying public water systems throughout the state, including Beachwood's system. This assessment aimed to evaluate vulnerability to contamination, not to measure actual contamination levels in your water supply.
The assessment process involved:
- Identifying the source water assessment area that supplies your public water system
- Cataloging potential contamination sources within this area
- Analyzing how vulnerable the water source might be to these potential contaminants
DEP evaluated all public water systems for susceptibility across eight contaminant categories, rating them as Low (L), Medium (M), or High (H). These ratings consider both how exposed a water source might be to contamination and how frequently potential contaminants are used nearby.
Understanding your water source is important. Beachwood relies on groundwater, which comes from precipitation that seeps into underground aquifers. While sometimes safer than surface water, groundwater quality can be affected by:
- Geological factors (rock and soil types)
- Well depth and construction
- Surrounding land use (industrial, agricultural, or residential development)
- Presence of pesticides, fertilizers, or manures
- Proximity to contaminated sites, leaking storage tanks, and landfills
For detailed water quality information, please review the Consumer Confidence Report issued annually by your water utility as required by federal Safe Drinking Water Act regulations.

In November 1914, the New York Tribune partnered with Mr. Bertram Chapman Mayo (founder of Beachwood) to create an unprecedented newspaper promotion offering subscribers the opportunity to "Buy into the New York Tribune and secure a great deal at Beautiful Beachwood." This initiative, described as "the best premium offered by a newspaper," urged people to "Act on the double, secure your part in this Summer Paradise now!"
Mayo, an innovative entrepreneur who had already established four other communities across the country, transported prospective buyers via train to select from 1,763 available acres. Following daytime business transactions, visitors enjoyed beachside gatherings with refreshments and family entertainment.
By 1915, community infrastructure included a clubhouse, yacht club, pier, bath house, railroad station, and a 37-room lodge, alongside 93 cottages. Beachwood was officially incorporated as a municipality on March 22, 1917. The population grew from 1,200 summer residents in 1919 to 2,774 year-round residents by 1960, with recent census data showing nearly 10,000 residents.
Today, Beachwood is a residential community featuring two schools (Beachwood Elementary and Intermediate South) within the Toms River Regional School District, and is home to Ocean County's Jakes Branch Park. Originally governed under the Commission format, residents voted on June 20, 1967 to transition from the "Walsh Act" to a Borough Form of Government, which took effect January 1, 1968, establishing a Mayor and six Council Members elected at-large.
