Ensuring safe and reliable water remains the highest priority for the Cedar Hill Water Department. Our staff takes tremendous pride in delivering water that meets or exceeds all federal and state quality standards.

To maintain tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in water. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) oversees water systems throughout Texas. Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) conducts over 180 different tests, performing approximately 50,000 monthly assessments to verify compliance with quality requirements. Additionally, Cedar Hill Water Department performs at least 55 local bacteriological tests monthly.

Cedar Hill's peak usage occurred on July 31st, 2017, when 8.5 million gallons were delivered to residents. Though no meetings are currently scheduled, our Water Department staff offers educational sessions on Water Conservation and Resource Protection. Schools and businesses interested in hosting such sessions should contact Water Operations at 972-291-5126.

The City Council governs the Water Department and meets twice monthly. These meetings are open to the public. For meeting information, please call 972-291-5100 x1011.

Municipal water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and may pick up substances from animal presence or human activities. Potential contaminants in source water before treatment include:

  • Microbial contaminants - viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants - salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides - from various sources including agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic chemical contaminants - synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants - naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining

Cedar Hill obtains water primarily from purchased surface sources through Dallas Water Utilities (DWU), with a small portion coming from a city-owned well. Our surface water originates from the Trinity aquifer, Elm Fork of the Trinity River, and Lakes Ray Hubbard, Ray Roberts, Lewisville, Grapevine, and Tawakoni.

The TCEQ completed a source water assessment indicating some sources are vulnerable to certain contaminants. In the water loss audit submitted to the Texas Water Development Board for January 1 to December 31, 2017, Cedar Hill's system lost approximately 15.07% of input volume.
