About Us
A municipal water source assessment was completed in March 2003. The evaluation showed that five of Daly City's six production wells were classified as highly protected from potential contamination pathways. Well #4's assessment indicated it was only moderately protected. With the activation of the new Sullivan well in 2015, Well #4 has been designated as an emergency backup well.
Daly City's municipal wells are considered most vulnerable to automotive repair activities, street contaminants, and railway operations. A complete copy of the assessment is available through the State Water Solutions Control Board, Division of Municipal Water, 850 Marina Bay Parkway, Building P, 2nd Floor, Richmond, CA 94804. You can also obtain a summary by contacting either State Board District Engineer Eric Lacy at (510) 620-3453, or Daly City's Director of Water and Wastewater Resources Patrick Sweetland at (650) 991-8200.
Fluoridation Program: Required by State law, water fluoridation is a widely accepted practice proven safe and effective for preventing tooth decay. The SFPUC has provided fluoridated water for over 50 years. Since June 2004, Daly City fluoridates its blended well water supply throughout the community according to the optimal level established by the SWRCB. Blended water entering your home is optimally fluoridated at 0.6 mg/L. The average dosage for 2016 ranged from 0.0 to 0.8. For additional information, visit the SWRCB website: www.waterboards.ca.gov/drinking_water/certlic/ drinking water/Fluoridation.HTML.
Special Health Considerations: Municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of certain contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate a health risk. Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Immunocompromised persons, such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants can be particularly susceptible to infections. These individuals should seek advice about municipal water from their healthcare providers. USEPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to reduce infection risk from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791 or www.epa.gov/safewater.
Free Water Conservation Resources: To assist our customers with ongoing conservation efforts, the Department of Water and Wastewater Resources offers various complimentary water-saving devices, publications, rebates, and educational programs for residents, commercial users, and students. For more information, contact the Department of Water and Wastewater Resources at (650) 991-8200.

History of Daly City
Daly City is a coastal community located at the northernmost edge of San Mateo County. Sharing a common border with San Francisco, Daly City is known as the "Gateway to the Peninsula." The city stretches from the Pacific Ocean on the west to nearly San Francisco Bay on the east, and includes San Bruno Mountain, a State and County Park featuring the highest peak in the area's rolling terrain.
Much of Daly City occupies what were original Spanish land grants, largely uninhabited following the discovery of San Francisco Bay by Gaspar de Portola's exploratory party in 1769. A military installation, the Presidio, was established near the bay entrance, and with a mission near a small lake in what became San Francisco, European settlers populated the northern peninsula. The indigenous people who once foraged around San Bruno Mountain soon disappeared, their lands used for cattle grazing.
The road leading north from other settlements was named Mission Road, with its general route remaining largely unchanged since Spanish times. This road forked at what is now known as "top-of-the-hill" in Daly City, with one route leading to the mission and the other to the Presidio. Many food supplies for these stations were grown in a fertile coastal valley in present-day Pacifica, about twenty miles southwest.
While other Peninsula areas were being settled, little development occurred in the region just across the county line from San Francisco. The soil wasn't conducive to farming, and interest in the open spaces west of San Bruno Mountain only emerged during the California Gold Rush of the early 1850s when settlers began claiming lands on old Spanish grants. Among the first was an Irish blacksmith named Robert Thornton, who established his business near the south end of San Francisco's Lake Merced, joining other early settlers who were predominantly Irish.
