About Us
The Edinburg Utilities Department is pleased to present the annual Municipal Water Quality Report for 2017, also known as the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). Both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) require all water providers to produce an annual report informing customers about their water quality. This report contains vital information about Edinburg's water sources, contents, and compliance with state standards.
In 2017, Edinburg's tap water met all federal and state health standards for water treatment and monitoring. The Edinburg Utilities Department vigilantly safeguards water supplies and maintains high quality standards throughout the system. This report provides an overview of last year's water quality testing results and explanations of technical terms.
Edinburg operates two water treatment facilities that have earned TCEQ's "Superior Public Water Supply" designation. The Downtown Water Treatment Plant (500 E. Mahl) has a 10 million gallons per day (MGD) capacity with rapid sand filtration, while the West Water Treatment Plant (1752 S. Mon Mack) offers 16 MGD capacity using a solids-contact process with flow demand filters. Both plants operate continuously year-round, using chlorine dioxide as primary disinfectant and chloramines for distribution. Current average daily water treatment is 11.908 MGD, with peak demand reaching 13 MGD.
The West Water Treatment Plant recently completed an expansion project, doubling its capacity from 8 MGD to 16 MGD. This expansion, completed in November 2017, increases the city's total treatment capacity to 26 MGD, serving up to 36,848 connections. The city currently maintains over 25,000 service connections.
Edinburg's primary water source is the Rio Grande River. The city maintains a 210-million-gallon raw water reservoir (19-day supply) at 3420 W. Freddy Gonzalez. The city owns 11,809.952 acre-feet of annual water rights, delivered through Hidalgo County Irrigation Districts #1 and #2. The city also maintains an agreement with McAllen Public Utilities for supplemental treated water when needed.
Special Notice (Required by TCEQ): Some residents may be more vulnerable to certain contaminants in tap water, including immunocompromised individuals, the elderly, infants, and those with specific medical conditions. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers about their drinking water.
