About Us
Municipal water sources (including tap and bottled varieties) originate from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or through ground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, while also potentially collecting substances from animal presence or human activities.
All municipal water, bottled included, can reasonably be expected to contain at least trace amounts of some contaminants. However, the presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more detailed information about contaminants and potential health effects, residents can contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
Source water may contain several types of contaminants:
- Microbial contaminants - viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants - salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial discharge, oil/gas production, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides - from various sources including agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants - synthetic and volatile compounds resulting from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and waste systems
- Radioactive contaminants - naturally occurring or from resource extraction activities
The EPA regulates public water systems through specific contaminant limitations, while FDA regulations establish similar protections for bottled water products. Sometimes taste, color, or odor issues in water aren't necessarily health-related concerns.
Certain populations may have increased vulnerability to particular contaminants like Cryptosporidium. Infants, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems (including cancer patients, organ transplant recipients, and people with HIV/AIDS) should seek medical advice about their municipal water consumption.
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily enters water through plumbing materials. While the City of Levelland provides quality water, we cannot control the components used in residential plumbing. To minimize potential lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption after it has been sitting for several hours.
The CITY OF LEVELLAND purchases water from CANADIAN RIVER MUNICIPAL WATER AUTHORITY, which is treated through the LUBBOCK PUBLIC WATER SYSTEM. This supply comes from Lake Meredith in Sanford, TX, and groundwater from the OGALLALA aquifer.
