IMPORTANT HEALTH INFORMATION
Certain individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants in tap water than the general population. People with compromised immune systems, such as those undergoing cancer treatment, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS, elderly residents, and infants face increased health risks from infections. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption habits. Guidelines from the USEPA/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on reducing Cryptosporidium and microbial contamination risks are available via the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
LEAD IN RESIDENTIAL PLUMBING
Elevated lead levels pose serious health concerns, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in water typically comes from service line materials and household plumbing components. While we provide quality municipal water, we cannot control the materials used in plumbing fixtures. To minimize lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption or cooking, especially after prolonged periods of non-use. For concerns about lead content, consider water testing. Additional information on lead in water is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at www.epa.gov/lead.
SCHOOL LEAD TESTING INITIATIVE
The City of Merced proactively conducted mandatory lead testing at all schools within its service area. Working with 30 public and private K-12 institutions, testing was completed by October 2017. The Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for lead is 15 ppb, and most schools in Merced tested below this threshold.
SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT
A source water assessment for City of Merced's water system was completed in March 2003. Water sources were identified as vulnerable to various activities including gas stations, dry cleaners, underground storage tanks, sewer systems, chemical pipelines, agricultural operations, septic systems, and wells. WATER FLUORIDATION PROGRAM
Our water supply is treated with fluoride to supplement natural levels for dental health benefits. State regulations require fluoride levels in treated water to maintain an optimal dose of 0.70 ppm. Our monitoring showed fluoride levels ranging from 0.09-1.05 ppm, averaging 0.76 ppm. COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
The City Council meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 6:00 pm at the Civic Center, 678 West 18th Street, Merced. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings.
