California Water Utility Companies

The City currently maintains 79 active wells, 9 storage tanks, and 181 water sampling points throughout the system. Until 1995, Modesto residents received their water exclusively from groundwater wells. To ensure continued delivery of clean, reliable water, the City formed a partnership with the Modesto Irrigation District (MID) to build a surface water treatment facility at Modesto Reservoir.

This treatment facility produces water that meets all state and federal quality standards. In 2017, approximately 43% of water supplied came from groundwater wells, while 57% was treated surface water.

Surface Water Treatment Process:

  • Water flows from Modesto Reservoir into the treatment plant where ozone disinfection occurs
  • Liquid alum and polymers are rapidly mixed with the water to create floc, which captures suspended particles
  • Water moves through sedimentation basins allowing floc to settle before filtration
  • Anthracite filters remove any remaining floc particles
  • Chlorine is added as the final disinfectant
  • Lime and carbon dioxide are introduced to prevent pipe corrosion
  • Treated water flows to Modesto and into two 5-million-gallon storage tanks
  • Water is distributed through the system as needed, blending with groundwater before reaching homes
