City of Odessa Municipal Water Report Information

Odessa ranks as the 30th largest city in Texas, situated approximately 2,851 feet above sea level. The climate features summer temperatures ranging from the 60s to upper 90s, while winter temperatures typically span from the low 30s to upper 50s.

The city's primary economic driver is oil production. Odessa hosts three higher education institutions and two high schools. The book "Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream" by H.G. Bissinger and its film adaptation center on the 1988 football season of the Permian Panthers, one of Odessa's high school teams. Many individuals featured in the book still reside in Odessa today.

A television series also titled "Friday Night Lights" aired from 2006 to 2011, loosely based on the book but set in the fictional town of Dillon, Texas. The TV Guide Channel once featured a reality series called "Making News: Texas Style" that followed reporters from the local CBS affiliate, KOSA-TV.

Portions of Tommy Lee Jones' film "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" were filmed in Odessa, and the truTV reality show "Black Gold" featured three oil wells outside the city. Odessa was also portrayed as Claire Bennett's hometown in Season 1 of NBC's "Heroes," popularizing the phrase "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World."

Notable local attractions include the second-largest meteor crater in the nation, the World's Largest Jackrabbit statue, and the World Famous Odessa Chuck Wagon Gang.

Established in 1881 as a Texas and Pacific Railroad stop, Odessa's name reportedly originated from its resemblance to the Russian city in Ukraine. The region boasts beautiful West Texas sunsets and a warm climate that makes it naturally inviting.

Located in Ector County, approximately midway between Fort Worth and El Paso, Odessa covers 35.04 square miles within the Permian Basin. This geological formation, measuring roughly 250 miles wide by 300 miles long, formed during the Permian Period about 280 million years ago. The area was once covered by the Permian Sea, whose abundant marine life eventually formed the massive oil and gas deposits still being extracted today.
