ABOUT OVIEDO: Located in eastern Seminole County, Oviedo spans approximately 16 square miles. The city currently has around 37,128 residents, with a demographic breakdown of 79.3% white non-Hispanic, 9.7% black non-Hispanic, 4.0% Asian, and 7.0% other races. The median household income stands at $79,786, with average home values around $292,612.
Key employers include Publix supermarkets, A. Duda and Sons (major turf producers), the Oviedo Mall, Seminole State College (just outside city limits), and the City of Oviedo itself with over 300 staff members across full-time, part-time, and seasonal positions. The community houses four elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school.
GOVERNANCE: Oviedo operates under a Council/City Manager government system. The City Manager receives policy direction from a five-member elected City Council, each serving two-year terms. The current Council includes Mayor Dominic Persampiere, Councilman Steve Henken, Councilman Keith Britton, Councilman Bob Pollack, and Councilwoman Megan Sladek. Council meetings occur on the first and third Monday monthly at 6:30 p.m. in the Oviedo City Council Chambers and are broadcast live on Spectrum channel 496.
City Manager Bryan Cobb oversees daily operations across departments including Administration, Development Services, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Police, Public Works, and Recreation and Parks. The city maintains two fire stations, a potable water treatment facility, and a wastewater treatment facility.
COMMUNITY GROWTH: Oviedo is experiencing significant development. On Mitchell Hammock Road's north side, east of State Road 434 and bordered by Kingsbridge West subdivision, the city is expanding its downtown across approximately 50 acres. This mixed-use development will feature residential elements (single-family homes, townhomes, apartments), a commercial business district, and retail establishments. Various other developments throughout the city are providing residents with new dining and consumer service options.
