Where does Vienna's water come from? Our water is sourced from groundwater in the Ohio River Valley Alluvium. According to the source water assessment, the eight wells supplying Vienna's water system have high susceptibility to contamination due to previous detections of man-made chemicals and the sensitive nature of the aquifer.

Why is water treatment necessary? All water naturally contains various contaminants. Federal and state regulations establish limits and treatment requirements to minimize health risks from these substances. The City of Vienna follows all EPA guidelines to ensure your water remains safe.

Understanding contaminants in your water: To ensure tap water safety, the EPA sets strict standards for public water systems, similar to FDA regulations for bottled water. While all water may contain trace amounts of some contaminants, this doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Our water sources (including wells) can pick up substances from natural minerals, animal presence, or human activity.

Potential contaminants include:

  • Microbial contaminants from sewage systems, wildlife, or agricultural operations
  • Inorganic substances like metals and salts from natural sources or urban runoff
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture and residential use
  • Organic chemicals from industrial processes and petroleum production
  • Radioactive materials that occur naturally or result from mining activities

Health considerations: Some residents may be more vulnerable to water contaminants, including those with compromised immune systems, cancer patients undergoing treatment, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers about their drinking water.
