Odenton is a Census Designated Place (CDP) located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. With a population of 20,534 recorded in the 2000 census, the community is named after former Maryland Governor Oden Bowie. The area is bordered by Gambrills to the east, Severn to the north, Fort Meade to the west, and Crofton to the south, situated at the junction of Maryland highways 170 and 175, running parallel to Route 32. The postal code is 21113, though residents often hear mispronunciations like "Odington" or "oDENton."
In 1840, the steam-powered Annapolis and Elk Ridge Railroad (A&ER) was constructed through what would later become Odenton, then just a sparsely populated farming community. During the Civil War, Union soldiers guarded this vital rail line, as it provided the only reliable connection between the North and Washington D.C. after southern sympathizers disrupted rail traffic through Baltimore.
Odenton, nicknamed "The Town a Railroad Built" by Catherine L. O'Malley, was officially established in 1868 with the construction of the Baltimore Potomac (B&P) Railroad connecting Baltimore and Washington D.C. At the intersection where the B&P crossed the A&ER, a train station and telegraph office were built and named for Oden Bowie, who served as President of the B&P and former governor. Train service to this station began on July 2, 1872.
