The Town of Fort Mill is proud to present the 2017 Annual Municipal Water Report. This report is mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency to inform residents about the quality water services delivered daily. We're committed to ensuring excellent water quality and want to share our ongoing system improvement efforts.

Our mission is to provide high-quality, safe municipal water that exceeds all federal and state standards. As mandated by the Safe Drinking Water Act, this Consumer Confidence Report outlines our water source, testing results, and additional relevant information.

Fort Mill purchases its water from the City of Rock Hill through a contract agreement. The distribution system consists of a 24" transmission main installed along Highway 21 from the Catawba River Bridge to various delivery points throughout town. In 2017, we purchased over 800 million gallons from Rock Hill, which we distributed to residential, commercial, industrial, and wholesale customers.

Lake Wylie serves as Rock Hill's raw water source. This water undergoes treatment at their facility, where the process is monitored 24/7. Fort Mill conducts additional testing throughout our distribution system as required by state regulations.

The data in this report shows monitoring results from January 1 to December 31, 2017. We're pleased to confirm that Fort Mill's municipal water meets or exceeds all federal and state requirements and is safe for consumption.

All water sources, including bottled water, may contain some level of naturally occurring or man-made substances. These might include microbes, inorganic or organic chemicals, and radioactive materials. It's important to understand that the presence of these substances doesn't necessarily pose a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to certain water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems, including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants may face increased infection risks. These individuals should seek advice from their healthcare providers regarding their drinking water.

Fort Mill Municipal Water Report Information

The Town of Fort Mill (established 1873) is situated just south of the North Carolina state line. Our neighboring communities include Rock Hill, SC to the south and Charlotte, NC to the north. Approximately 12,000 residents live within the Town's corporate limits, with nearly 50,000 people residing in the entire Township.

Fort Mill derives its name from a colonial-era fort built by the British and a grist mill that operated on nearby Steele Creek. The region has a rich historical background. Catawba Indians inhabited this area for centuries before Scotch-Irish settlers began arriving in the 1750s and 1760s, gradually forming a small settlement.

The town experienced rapid growth in the late 1800s with the establishment of textile mills. Notable historical events include Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Cabinet passing through during their retreat from Richmond in 1865, with the last full Confederate Cabinet meeting held at the White Homestead in Fort Mill.

Fort Mill was also home to Elliott White Springs, a World War I flying ace, author, industrialist, and member of the South Carolina Hall of Fame. In the early 1700s, Thomas Spratt and his wife Elizabeth traveled through upper South Carolina in their wagon. They spent a night among the friendly Catawba Indians and were invited to settle on a large tract of land given to them, becoming the first white settlers in the Fort Mill area. Their descendants continue to live here today.

The same spirit of hospitality and welcome exists in modern Fort Mill, making it a friendly and convenient place to visit and explore.
