Grand Blanc, meaning "great white," was initially settled by Chippewa Indians, with the name originating from French traders who arrived before 1800. Pioneer families began settling the fertile farmland by 1823, and Grand Blanc Township became Genesee County's first governmental unit in 1833. The arrival of railroad service in 1862 spurred community growth. In 1904, the Village of Grand Blanc established Michigan's first consolidated school system. The central four-square-mile area was incorporated as the City of Grand Blanc in 1930.
Today, both governmental units collaborate to provide community services including recreation programs, senior citizen support, McFarlen Public Library access, Heritage Museum facilities, and an excellent school system. Residents also enjoy quality healthcare centers, dining options, and retail establishments. Grand Blanc hosts the world headquarters for General Motors Service Parts Operations and the award-winning Genesys Regional Medical Center. The community prides itself on being "Planned, Progressive, and Prestigious."
