The majority of high-quality water GHID delivers to our customers comes from groundwater aquifers beneath the GHID service area. We are dedicated to protecting these vital groundwater sources from contamination.
Our source water faces several potential contamination risks, including:
- Leaking underground storage tanks
- Residential and commercial herbicides and pesticides
- Agricultural fertilizers and runoff
- Watershed activities
- Domestic and industrial sewage
- Stormwater runoff
A Source Water Protection Plan serves as our essential tool for safeguarding the groundwater aquifer. Preventing contaminants from entering the source water area is our primary defense strategy. This proactive approach saves public funds by reducing the need for extensive water treatment later.
How can residents help protect our water supply? Simple actions make a significant difference:
- Store and handle household chemicals according to manufacturer guidelines
- Apply lawn chemicals and fertilizers at recommended rates
- Properly dispose of all chemicals through appropriate channels
The Salt Lake County Landfill (6030 West 1300 South) accepts chemical waste, used petroleum products, antifreeze, pesticides, fertilizers, paint, and similar household materials. Every effort, whether small or large, helps preserve our groundwater from contamination.
A Source Water Protection Plan exists for each of GHID's seven wells and can be reviewed at our office during business hours. Copies are also available at the Utah Division of Drinking Water.
