The Greenlawn Water District enhances water quality through specialized treatment at all wells before distribution. Water pH is adjusted upward with sodium hydroxide to minimize corrosive effects on water mains and household plumbing. To address organic compound contamination, granular activated carbon filters have been installed at Plants 3, 8, 11, and 13, while Plant 12 utilizes an air stripping facility.

Since June 2010, the District has incorporated small amounts of chlorine as a disinfectant to prevent bacterial growth throughout the distribution system. Following state regulations, Greenlawn Water District conducts routine monitoring for numerous parameters including coliform bacteria, turbidity, inorganic contaminants, lead, copper, nitrate, volatile organic compounds, trihalomethanes, and synthetic organic contaminants.

Over 135 individual water quality parameters are tested multiple times annually across all wells. The detected parameters shown on page three are often naturally present in Long Island water supplies and typically pose no adverse health effects.

The NYSDOH completed a source water assessment for this system with assistance from local health officials. This assessment evaluated potential contamination threats based on available information and included a susceptibility rating for each well. The susceptibility depends on both contamination sources within the well's contributing area and how easily contaminants can travel through the subsurface to reach wells.

Most of Greenlawn's wells have been rated as having high susceptibility to industrial solvents and nitrates. The elevated nitrate susceptibility is primarily due to permitted discharge facilities and residential land use activities, including lawn fertilization. Industrial solvent susceptibility is mainly attributed to transportation routes and commercial/industrial activities in the assessment area. 1. How much is a typical monthly bill for water and sewer? This varies by household since your usage depends on family size, season, and water consumption habits. Average residential usage is approximately 4,000 gallons per month. Based on current water and sewer rates, the average monthly bill for Mount Airy residents is about $48.50. For those outside city limits, average usage is around 3,900 gallons, with bills averaging $46 for water and $50 for sewer, though sewer service isn't available in all areas. In the Flat Rock/Bannertown Water and Sewer District, average usage is about 2,900 gallons, with monthly bills approximately $41 for water and $44 for sewer where available.
2. When is my utility bill due? Current charges shown on your bill must be paid within 10 days of the invoice date. Charges become delinquent after the stated due date. 3. What if I cannot pay my bill by the due date? Accounts with unpaid current charges after the due date will incur a 5% late fee (minimum $25) applied 25 days after billing. If you're unable to pay the full amount by the deadline, installment payment arrangements may be available by contacting a representative at 336-786-3517.
4. If I cannot pay my bill, will you disconnect my service? A $25 nonpayment fee applies to all accounts with outstanding balances 25 days after billing. These accounts are scheduled for disconnection if not paid by 40 days after the original bill date. Service can be restored upon payment of all amounts due.
