About Us
Where does your water come from? The water supplied to Millbury residents is sourced from four groundwater wells. Each well's water undergoes treatment before distribution through an extensive network spanning over fifty-one miles of piping and a 1.2-million gallon storage tank. Our system is situated within the Blackstone River Watershed and serves approximately 8,400 people.
In 2017, our water system delivered an average of 1.49 million gallons per day (MGD). The City of Worcester supplemented our supply with 46.1 million gallons (about 0.126 MGD), representing roughly 8% of total consumption. For emergency situations or high-demand periods, our distribution system maintains an interconnection with Grafton's water supply.
How is your water treated? All water from our four wells receives underground filtration and chemical treatment for disinfection and pH adjustment. The Millbury Avenue Well water undergoes additional filtration at the Millbury Avenue Water Treatment Facility. Water from the two Jacques wells receives supplemental ion exchange treatment to remove perchlorate contaminants.
Disinfection By-Products (DBPs) form during the disinfection process when naturally occurring organic matter reacts with chlorine. Current regulations limit certain types of DBPs including Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM) and Total Haloacetic Acids (THAA). Long-term consumption of water containing elevated DBP levels may affect liver, kidney, or central nervous system health and potentially increase cancer risk. Aquarion Water Company continuously evaluates its systems to maintain compliance with DBP regulations.
The Massachusetts DEP's Source Water Assessment Program, which evaluates potential contamination risks to water supplies, has determined that Millbury System water sources have high susceptibility to potential contamination. The complete report is available at mass.Gov/dep/water/drinking/2186000.pdf.
Regarding lead in drinking water, the federal EPA and Massachusetts Department of Public Health have established strict regulations. If present in drinking water, lead can cause numerous adverse health effects. Aquarion monitors for lead through testing stagnant tap water samples from high-risk homes. Our system complies with the EPA's lead limit of 15 parts per billion in no more than 10 percent of tested samples.
