Melvindale Municipal Water Company and EPAMelvindale Municipal Water Report Info
Melvindale began as a modest farming community called Oakwood Heights in the 1920s. Real estate developers transformed the area to accommodate workers employed at the nearby Ford Rouge plant. The city's name honors developer Melvin Wilkinson, who played a key role in its establishment.
Incorporated as a village in 1924 and later as a city in 1933, Melvindale experienced its most significant growth during the 1940s. The post-World War II industrial expansion from Detroit reached neighboring communities, and Melvindale's strategic location at the intersection of major industrial corridors made it ideal for rapid commercial development between 1940-1950.
Today, with limited undeveloped land remaining, Melvindale is pursuing community revitalization through the Brownfield Redevelopment Program. The State of Michigan recognizes it as a Core Community, providing additional incentives for developers. Living up to its motto, "The Little City with a BIG Heart," Melvindale maintains its small-town atmosphere while offering excellent opportunities for residents, workers, and businesses.
