About Us

mawc@mawc.org
The Indian Creek and George L. Sweeney Water Treatment facilities annually switch their disinfection method from Chloramines to Free Chlorine from mid-October through May. This essential transition maintains proper bacteriological quality in your water supply. During this period, residents may notice a stronger chlorine taste.
The standard chlorination process combines carefully controlled concentrations of ammonia and chlorine to form chloramines, which maximize disinfection potential while reducing disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Chloramines provide consistent protection throughout MAWC's distribution network, preventing bacterial growth in water lines and storage tanks, while also reducing chlorine taste and odor in tap water.
Notifications about these seasonal changes are posted on the MAWC website (www.mawc.org) before implementation.

The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County was established by the Westmoreland County Commissioners on April 9, 1942, celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2017. The water system has evolved through strategic acquisitions and planned expansions over the past 75+ years.
In 1943, MAWC acquired Citizens Water Co., followed by Westmoreland Water Co. and Vandergrift Water Co. in 1950, when planning began for the Beaver Run Reservoir. McKeesport's Water System was purchased in 1987. These acquisitions have created a service area spanning approximately 25 miles east-to-west and 40 miles north-to-south, with over 2,400 miles of pipeline.
Since 1973, the Authority has relied on two primary water sources:
- Beaver Run Reservoir - Built in 1952, expanded in 1962, with 11 billion gallon capacity and 45 million gallon daily yield
- Youghiogheny River - Drainage area of 1,326 square miles with minimum flow of 213 million gallons daily
The system is served by three modern treatment facilities:
- Indian Creek Supply Filtration Plant - Near Connellsville, 40 million gallon daily capacity, upgraded in 1979 and 2017-2018
- McKeesport Filtration Plant - Completed 1990, 10 million gallon daily capacity, serving McKeesport, White Oak and Port Vue
- George R. Sweeney Water Treatment Plant - Located at Beaver Run Reservoir, upgraded in 2015, 24 million gallon daily capacity
MAWC sells bulk water to several neighboring communities and operates wastewater systems serving Jeannette, Hempfield Township, and multiple boroughs including Penn, Youngwood, Ligonier, White Oak, and Avonmore.
