ABOUT YOUR WATER SUPPLY

Municipal water for North Adams residents comes from both surface water and groundwater sources. The primary surface water sources include Mount Williams and Notch Reservoirs. The Notch Reservoir, located on Reservoir Road, holds approximately 91 million gallons with a 2.5 square mile watershed area and connects to Mount Williams Reservoir via a concrete overflow conduit. Mount Williams Reservoir on Pattison Road stores approximately 200 million gallons with a 1.75 square mile watershed.

All raw surface water undergoes treatment at the North Adams Water Treatment Facility (WTF). The Massachusetts DEP source ID numbers for our facilities are: Notch Reservoir #1209000-01S and Mount Williams Reservoir #1209000-04S.

SOURCE WATER PROTECTION

Following 1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act, each state must evaluate all drinking water sources for contamination vulnerability. The MA DEP completed a Source Water Assessment and Protection (SWAP) report for North Adams Water Department and assigned a "high" susceptibility rating based on their assessment. This rating indicates potential for contamination, not actual contamination presence.

The complete SWAP report is available from the City by contacting Timothy Lescarbeau, Commissioner of Public Services (413-662-3000) or from the MA DEP's Springfield Regional Office (Kim Longridge: 413-755-2215).

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Certain populations may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general public. Those with compromised immune systems (cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, some elderly individuals, and infants) may face increased infection risks. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-7491).
