Sault Ste Marie Municipal Water Report Info

Sault Ste. Marie was incorporated as a City in 1912, though its rich heritage dates back to the 1600's. Located at the heart of the Great Lakes along the St. Marys River, this international port of entry to the United States continues to be a vital hub for commerce, trade and transportation.

Known as the 'Friendliest City in Algoma,' Sault Ste. Marie stands as one of northern Canada's most scenic and vibrant urban centers. The area has served as a traditional North American gathering place for centuries. Its first inhabitants were the native Anishinaabe people, specifically from the Ojibwe group (sometimes called Chippewa).

With plentiful whitefish in the rapids and abundant game and furs in surrounding forests, the region became a preferred location for trade and territorial meetings, eventually emerging as an important seat of political influence. Today, it remains recognized as the gathering place of the Three Fires Confederacy – an Anishinaabe alliance of Ojibwe, Ottawa and Potawatomi groups.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, European settlers began moving into the area, making it a significant stop on the Fur Trade Route. Trading posts developed on both sides of the St. Marys River, giving both the Canadian and American Saults the distinction of being among the oldest European settlements in Ontario and Michigan respectively.

While much has changed, Sault Ste. Marie's tradition as a gathering place endures. With neighboring First Nations communities and one of Ontario's largest urban indigenous populations, the area remains home to many Anishinaabe people, while also welcoming newcomers from around the world. Its strategic location at the heart of the Great Lakes and North America ensures it continues as an important destination for business, trade and travel.
