About Us
Your municipal water originates from the Spokane Valley Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer. This pristine aquifer spans two states, contains approximately ten trillion gallons of water, and serves as the sole water source for nearly 500,000 regional residents.
The groundwater supply is naturally replenished through precipitation and snowmelt from northern Idaho and western Montana. Natural filtration occurs through surface vegetation and gravel layers above the water table. The aquifer flows through northern Idaho into Washington, eventually discharging into the Spokane River and Little Spokane River.
What makes our aquifer unique is its considerable size, rapid water movement, porous soil composition, and the developed land above it. These characteristics make it particularly vulnerable to contamination, requiring careful stewardship from all community members.
While aquifer levels have remained consistent over the past century, scientific models indicate that despite its abundance, our water supply is not unlimited. Thoughtful planning is essential to preserve this clean water resource for future generations.
